This is the kind of stuff that really tickles my nips. This is a nifty idea from a solo gentleman out of Oregon.
We’re looking at a helmet that has the functionality of a traditional helmet, but with the added benefit of also being used as a lock.
We can see the chin strap; nothing fancy there. But we can also see the locking system in the back, which is not the same as the chin strap.
Long story short, the lock can extend and retract from within the helmet casing, then the latch can be fixed to the combination lock on the other side of the helmet. Would be cool if the strap was Spectra or Kevlar to keep weight down.
I understand this is likely not for the typical mountain or road biker that’ll carry around a heavy lock in their car. This is probably geared toward the city rider or commuter who needs to lock and unlock throughout the day and doesn’t want to bring any extra weight around with them. I can also see this being used by some kiddos at their local skate park, if they want to lock up their scooter/bike and go play somewhere else. I can see parents buying this to keep from having to replace their kid’s shit over and over.
After doing some quick research though, I’ve found at least one product on the market that is *exceptionally* similar, so maybe this thing has something to do with that.
Either way, if someone is developing this concept, I’m a fan. I’m always a fan of the little guy trying to improve anything. I like the idea of consolidation if it can be done without compromising safety
That being said, are there some limitations to this? Sure. I’m certain there’s some turd sitting on their couch funneling Flamin’ Hot Cheetos that’ll happily crack an egg of wisdom on us, but it’s a cool little idea, nonetheless.
I hope to convey to everyone that it’s not just SRAM, Shimano, Spesh, or whoever trying to develop the next idea; you can do it, too. I believe in you, I know you can do it.
Anyway, had my kid’s first birthday this weekend. Goes fast, enjoy it as much as you can.
Back to regular stuff in the next few days.
